The object
Around 1526 Hans Holbein cut a series of tiny woodblocks in which Death comes for everyone: the knight in his armour, the abbot in his robes, the family under its coat of arms. We have taken three and turned them over, so the finest cutting of the sixteenth century reads in bone on black.
Scale
The original, ca. 1526Our editionHolbein cut these blocks around 1526, each smaller than a playing card. At 30 × 40 cm the detail becomes the subject.
